Workshops

Communicating Your Results to a Scientific Audience and Beyond
Monday, June 23, 1:00 pm
Free (registration required)
Workshop Leaders: Nick Russo, Liza Morse, Liana Van Zen

Many students and early career professionals get no formal training on how to compile and deliver a talk at academic conferences or other academic settings. This training will cover how to structure and design a presentation for an academic conference, as well as advice on presentation delivery. The workshop leader will provide examples of good and bad slide design and presentation structure. Participants will discuss example presentation slides as groups and will have the opportunity to get feedback on their own presentation slides. In addition to providing formalized training in designing and delivering presentations in academic settings, the workshop leader will demonstrate how to adapt results for a non-academic audience.

Intro to R for Reproducible Scientific Analysis
Monday, June 23, 1:00 pm
Free (registration required)
Workshop Leaders: Dylan Titmuss, Aaron Skinner

The purpose of this workshop is to introduce participants to the fundamentals of R and RStudio as they relate to scientific data analysis. Content will build on components of the Software Carpentries curriculum and the workshop will be led by a certified Carpentries instructor. In addition to the relevant base R elements, participants will be introduced to three of the core “tidyverse” packages, “ggplot2,” “dplyr,” and “tidyr.” Together, these packages offer powerful and straightforward methods of organizing, manipulating, and visualizing data, and workshop attendees should leave with the ability to independently create plots to visualize their own data. A survey will be sent around to participants ahead of the workshop to gauge attendees’ level of experience with R in order to tailor the workshop accordingly, and participants will also be provided with instructions to download and install the latest version of R and RStudio ahead of time.
